Dragon Age 30 Day Challenge - Day 29

29. If You Made a Deal With a Demon What Would Your Bargain Be?

Well, the most efficient deals are those that give someone else to the demon, like the Warden can do with Connor or Hawke can do with Feynriel. With that deal there is practically no risk to the deal-maker. But it only seems to be possible if the deal-maker is in the Fade with the victim. It is the sort of circumstance that doesn’t come up very often.

We don’t really have any info on how, exactly, deals are made with demons in regular circumstances. I’ve seen many people assume that deals with demons never have any benefit and the deal-maker always becomes possessed right away, but I don’t think that is the case. Merrill made some kind of deal that worked out pretty well and didn’t involve the risk of getting possessed until at least six years after the deal was originally made. Merrill knew the risks and that is why she brings Hawke along to kill her if things go wrong. Marethari getting possessed was something Marethari chose to do because she didn’t believe in Merrill’s ability to handle her own business. Whether or not Merrill could handle things is something we will never find out. But my bet is on Merrill.

Now I do think that most deals with demons eventually result in possession, but the deal-maker must get some short term benefit out of it or else people would never try to make deals. I wish the game actually showed that and the deal making process aside from extreme circumstances like the Connor and Feynriel situations. Deal making should be risky, but what makes people do it is the slight chance of a big payoff if the deal-maker is clever enough.

It’s like gambling. People do that because ever so rarely someone wins. And I think deals with demons are more like blackjack than slots. There is a level of skill involved. You know going into it that what the demon really wants is to possess you, but if you play your cards right you can get something from the demon and avoid being possessed. But like with blackjack most people mess up and the house wins.

As for what I would ask for, I’m not sure. I don’t entirely know what I want right now. Wealth springs to mind as something that would be useful. Though the nice thing about demons is that they seem to know what is most tempting to people. So I can be lazy and let the demon figure out what it is I actually want. Then even if I don’t take the deal I’m coming out a winner.

Dragon Age 30 Day Challenge - Day 27 + 28

I’m was feeling pretty drained and failed to post yesterday so I’m doing two today. They’re related questions anyway.

27. Best Part of the Games

The interaction with companions is the whole reason I play Dragon Age. I’m certainly not playing for the plot or gameplay. Though the ability to somewhat influence the gameworld through PC choices is also interesting. But frankly PC choices don’t much effect the storyline of either game. DA:O sees the effect of PC plot related choices primarily in the epilogue, which doesn’t really count, and DA2 sees it in some changes in dialogue and the availability of minor quests. But then when I want PC choice to matter to the plot I play pen and paper tabletop games. In both games the choices that really matter are the relationships with other characters. And that level of character interaction is something Dragon Age does much better than the pen and paper games that heavily influenced it.

28. Worst Part of the Games

For me, combat and leveling up characters. Not that it is terribly done or that I don’t enjoy it, but it is something I have to slog through to get to what I’m really interested in. I have relatively little time or patience for video games these days and combat takes up a lot of time, which is why I always play on easy. I have not actually played it but Mass Effect 3’s narrative and action modes seems like a step in the right direction in that they acknowledges people have different things they want out of games. I loved 100+ hour games when I was younger and had nothing to do all summer, but I seriously doubt I’ll ever play a Final Fantasy game again. I just don’t have the time. I no longer want long, complicated games. I want shorter games with tighter stories.

heretherebdragons asked: How about some Fibonacci action: 1, 2, 3, 5 and 8. :)

1: Do you sleep with your closet doors open or closed?

Open. I never close it. Except at my parents house where having it open made movement though the room difficult I don’t really like closing any doors. It is too much of a hassle to keep opening and closing them. So they all stay open. Also my closet is pretty nicely organized so I don’t feel like I need to hide it by closing the door.

2: Do you take the shampoos and conditioner bottles from hotel?

Almost never. Since I moved around pretty much every year for the last six years (mostly in and out of dorms, but still) I developed a hate for owning things. I play a little game in my head of “how quickly could I pack everything up if I had to” every so often and that keeps my desire for material objects low. So I use the hotel’s stuff but taking it with me would be more things I had to carry around.

3: Do you sleep with your sheets tucked in or out?

Tucked in at the very foot of the bed and nowhere else. If I don’t I end up all wrapped up and it is hard to get untangled.

5: Do you like to use post-it notes?

Not really. I do have some that I got for free somewhere, but I don’t stick them to things. Just use them as small pieces of scrap paper.

8: Do you have freckles?

Only on my arms. They are part of my vanishing farmer’s tan from all the manual labor I used to do. My face is freckle free.

Dragon Age 30 Day Challenge - Day 26

26. Crack OTP

Gosh, I had enough trouble coming up with a regular OTP. I’m already not all that into shipping and tend to go for things that have a solid basis in canon. I’ve enjoyed reading some Alistair/Zevran and Anders/Fenris in the past, but I don’t really ship them. On the OTP question I mentioned that I’m interested in post DA2 Isabela/Fenris + Zevran shenanigans, but as part of that is a canon pair and Isabela and Zevran have a history it doesn’t really count as crack. Anora/Cauthrien kind of intrigues me and that probably qualifies as crack as they don’t get real interaction in game. Yeah, let’s go with Anora/Cauthrien. It has the potential for courtly love, knight devoted to queen stuff that I’m a sucker for in lesbian couples and hate in het.

So I’m still trying to come up with questions for the 30 day DA ladies meme. Ideally I want them to be both simple to answer for those who want to do the meme quickly and not devote a ton of energy to it and able to inspire lengthy essay responses for those who do want to put the energy in. Obviously that is a tall order.

I’m looking for both feedback on the current questions and suggestions for more questions. Current questions under the cut.

I don’t know if there is a way to reblog two people at once, so I’m reblogging myself. Thank you vieralynn and anthologyofwhat for your very helpful suggestions. Also if anyone following me didn’t see this last night and has any comment/suggetions they would be welcome.

So I found a book on blood magic at the library. It was in fact this book. I confess I felt a bit like a Circle mage and was somewhat furtive while flipping through it. I completely failed to check it out due to an irrational fear that the librarians would judge me. Also it could have been a templar trap.

The Amazon reviews are amazing. Someone needs to work that shit into a fanfic.

Yessssss. Aside from me generally disliking trolling and spreading false information, I almost want someone to review it in character as a DA mage. Maybe keep the fake review on tumblr.
